RRB Technician Vacancies, Age and Initial Pay
| Post | Vacancies | Initial pay |
|---|---|---|
| Technician Grade-I Signal Level 5 · Age 18–33 | 323 | ₹29,200 |
| Technician Grade-III Level 2 · Age 18–30 | 6,234 | ₹19,900 |
| Total | 6,557 | Post-specific |
Why do some pages show 6,565? The earlier indicative notice used that tentative count. The later detailed official CEN lists 6,557, so NeelGyan uses the detailed-notice total. RRB-wise and zone-wise distribution is available in Annexure B of the official PDF.
Vacancies are provisional and may increase or decrease. Initial pay is not the same as final in-hand salary; allowances and deductions depend on the appointment and applicable rules.
RRB Technician Eligibility
Technician Grade-I Signal
- Age: 18–33 years as on 1 July 2026.
- Qualification: B.Sc. in Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, Information Technology or Instrumentation, including specified combinations; or a three-year engineering diploma/engineering degree in the listed streams or their combinations.
- Medical standard: B-1.
Technician Grade-III
- Age: 18–30 years as on 1 July 2026.
- Qualification: Generally Matriculation/SSLC plus the relevant NCVT/SCVT ITI trade, or Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the specified trade. Exact trades differ across the 24 Grade-III categories.
- Medical standard: Post-specific; see Annexure A.
Important qualification rule: Candidates must possess the prescribed educational or technical qualification by 29 July 2026. Candidates awaiting final results are not eligible. For Level-2 Technician posts, an engineering diploma or degree is not accepted in place of ITI/CCAA unless the post parameters specifically allow it.
Common age relaxations: SC/ST candidates receive five years and OBC-NCL candidates receive three years in the upper-age limit, subject to valid certificates. PwBD, ex-servicemen, railway staff and other categories have separate conditions in the detailed CEN.
Applicants must also meet the nationality/citizenship, post-specific medical and document requirements in the official notification.
RRB Technician Selection Process
1. Computer Based Test
A separate CBT is conducted for each pay level. CBT marks determine shortlisting.
2. Document Verification
Candidates are shortlisted by CBT merit for the applicable pay level.
3. Medical Examination
Appointment remains subject to the prescribed railway medical fitness standard.
A candidate may choose only one RRB for a given pay level. Applying to more than one RRB for the same pay level can lead to rejection of all applications for that pay level. Candidates eligible for both Level 5 and Level 2 must submit separate applications, pay the applicable fee separately and take separate CBTs.
RRB Technician Exam Pattern
Both pay levels have a 90-minute CBT with 100 objective questions for 100 marks. One-third mark is deducted for each wrong answer. Marks may be normalized for a CBT held in multiple shifts.
Technician Grade-I Signal CBT
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Awareness | 10 | 10 |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 15 | 15 |
| Basics of Computers & Applications | 20 | 20 |
| Mathematics | 20 | 20 |
| Basic Science & Engineering | 35 | 35 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Technician Grade-III CBT
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 25 | 25 |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 25 | 25 |
| General Science | 40 | 40 |
| General Awareness | 10 | 10 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Minimum eligibility percentages: UR 40%, EWS 40%, OBC-NCL 30%, SC 30% and ST 25%. The notification permits a two-mark relaxation for PwBD candidates where there is a shortage against reserved vacancies. These are minimum eligibility percentages, not predicted cut-offs.
RRB Technician Syllabus
The Grade-I Signal and Grade-III syllabuses are different. Prepare only from the pay-level syllabus you are applying for; the topic lists in the CEN are illustrative rather than exhaustive.

Application fee and refund
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| All candidates except the concession categories below | ₹500 |
| SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minorities and EBC | ₹250 |
Candidates who appear in the CBT receive the applicable refund after bank charges: ₹400 from the ₹500 fee, or the ₹250 concession fee. Refunds use an operational Aadhaar-seeded bank account under the official CEN rules. The fee is paid separately for each pay level.

What Happens After the Application?
As of the last review, the detailed CEN does not announce CBT, Document Verification or Medical Examination dates. RRBs will publish schedules on their official websites and may also communicate through SMS or email.
- CBT date: Not announced in the detailed CEN.
- Admit card/e-call letter: Not announced.
- Answer key and objection window: Not announced.
- Result and cut-off: Not announced.
Avoid pages that present expected dates, “safe scores” or predicted cut-offs as official information.
How to Prepare for the RRB Technician CBT
- Choose the correct pay level first. Grade-I Signal and Grade-III have different subject weights and syllabuses.
- Turn the official syllabus into a checklist. Mark every topic as not started, learning, revising or test-ready.
- Practise within 90 minutes. Full-length practice should match the 100-question limit.
- Track accuracy as well as speed. One-third negative marking makes avoidable guesses costly.
- Keep current affairs separate. Revise them regularly while maintaining daily mathematics/reasoning or science practice.
Use the official syllabus as the boundary. Coaching notes and mock tests can support practice, but they do not replace the CEN.
RRB Technician Frequently Asked Questions
How many RRB Technician vacancies are in CEN 02/2026?
The detailed CEN lists 6,557 tentative vacancies: 323 for Technician Grade-I Signal and 6,234 across Technician Grade-III categories.
What is the RRB Technician selection process?
The recruitment stages are a single-stage Computer Based Test for the relevant pay level, Document Verification and Medical Examination.
Can I apply for both Grade-I Signal and Grade-III?
Yes, if you meet the respective eligibility rules, but Level 5 and Level 2 require separate applications, separate fees and separate CBTs. Choose only one RRB for each pay level.
Is there negative marking in the RRB Technician CBT?
Yes. One-third mark is deducted for each wrong answer in both pay-level CBTs.

Is RRB Technician recruitment conducted every year?
Do not assume a fixed annual schedule. Railway Recruitment Boards issue a CEN when recruitment is notified, and candidates should follow official RRB websites for each cycle.
Where should I check official RRB Technician updates?
Use the official RRB websites and the RRB application portal. Direct official links are collected in the “Official RRB Technician Sources” section above.
