About GATE
What is GATE?
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, or GATE, is a national computer-based examination used by participating institutions for postgraduate and doctoral admission and by some public-sector and other organisations for recruitment. IIT Guwahati organised GATE 2026.
GATE 2026 offered 30 test papers, and candidates could appear in one or an approved combination of two papers. Each paper is a three-hour, 100-mark test with 15 marks of General Aptitude and 85 marks from the selected paper's subject components.
The 2026 result was announced on 19 March and score cards were released on 27 March. A qualifying score does not guarantee admission, scholarship or employment: every institute, centralised admission route and recruiter applies its own paper-code, degree, category, score, interview and document rules.

GATE Application Process and Fees
Official application route and fee details
GATE 2026 registration is closed. A future applicant should choose the paper code by matching it to intended postgraduate programmes and recruitment notices, then confirm whether an approved second-paper combination adds useful options.
Complete the GOAPS form with identity, degree, category, PwD and examination-city information, upload compliant documents and pay through the official portal. Two papers attract twice the one-paper fee.
After the result, apply separately to institutions, centralised admission platforms and employers. A GATE application or score card does not create those applications automatically.

Third year or higher
- Candidates studying in the third year or higher of an eligible government-approved undergraduate programme could apply under the 2026 rules.
- Eligible fields extend beyond engineering and include the science, commerce, arts and humanities qualifications described in the official table.
- Admission or recruitment may impose a narrower degree and paper-code condition.

Government-approved degree
- Candidates who completed an eligible government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities could apply.
- Equivalent and international qualification cases should use the detailed official table.
- A GATE score does not establish equivalence for a receiving institution.
Age and attempts
No official limit
- The GATE 2026 FAQ states no age limit to appear.
- It also does not impose a limit on the number of attempts.
- A recruiter or scholarship can still set age or attempt-related conditions in its own notice.
Paper choice
One or approved two-paper combination
- Candidates could take one paper or two only from the approved combinations published for 2026.
- The receiving programme or employer decides which GATE paper it accepts.
- A strong score in an unaccepted paper code cannot replace that condition.

- Every GATE paper has its own official syllabus PDF. General Aptitude is common, while Engineering Mathematics and subject sections depend on the paper code.

GATE Preparation Strategy
A syllabus-first preparation route
- Download the current official syllabus and previous papers for the exact paper code before selecting books or a test series.
- Create a topic-weight and error table from official papers, but do not delete low-frequency official topics solely because they were absent recently.
- Practise MCQ, MSQ and NAT separately because their guessing and marking risks differ.
- Use full three-hour papers to build calculator fluency, section order and review discipline under the 100-mark structure.
- Score MCQ negative marks exactly and record conceptual, algebraic, unit, reading and time errors for re-testing.
- Research receiving institutes or employers early so the selected paper code and degree satisfy their rules.
GATE Books and Study Material
- Use the official GATE syllabus, previous papers and answer keys as the primary exam evidence.
- Choose one standard undergraduate text or concise revision source for each weak syllabus cluster, favouring sources already familiar from the degree.
- Add one paper-specific problem source and revise it repeatedly instead of collecting several overlapping handbooks.

Does the GATE qualifying cut-off guarantee admission?

Can arts or commerce students take GATE?
The official eligibility framework includes eligible government-approved degrees in Arts, Humanities and Commerce as well as Science, Engineering, Technology and Architecture, but the selected paper and intended programme must still be compatible.
